Réunion is an overseas French department located 5,800 miles (9,400 km) from Paris in the Indian Ocean where it sits 500 miles (800 km) to the east of Madagascar and 125 miles (200 km) to the west of Mauritius Island.
Réunion along with the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues form the Mascarene Archipelago.
Réunion is a mountainous island with a total area of 972 mi² (2,520 km²), which is an area three times smaller than the smallest metropolitan regions in France, Alsace (3,200 mi²/ 8,280 km²) and Corsica (3,350 mi² or 8,680 km²).
It has been a French department since 1946, a European region since the Treaty of Rome in 1957, and an outlying region since the Treaty of Maastricht in 1992.
As of 2016, it has a population of 850,996 inhabitants and shows significant population growth at a rate of 0.47% per year because of its fertility rate of 2.45 children per woman.
With 338 inhabitants per km² in 2015 (versus 282 fifteen years ago), Réunion is the third most densely populated region in France, just ahead of Nord Pas-de-Calais but behind Ile-de-France.
